International research team wondered whether the use of wireless networking via wi-fi for internet access has a negative impact on male fertility, as well as laboratory experiments have shown that sperm was destroyed after only four hours of exposure to such a network.
The experiments showed that the sperm had less mobility and had undergone changes and the genetic code.
According to data published in the journal Fertility and Sterility, scientists from the U.S. and Argentina studied semen samples from 29 healthy men.
Each sample was divided into two test tubes. One tube was placed for four hours next to a laptop that was connected wirelessly to the internet. The other test tube was placed in the room under the same conditions but without the laptop.
The researchers suspect that the effects observed are not attributable to the heat emitted by the laptop, although it has previously found that the sperm can be altered by heat.
The British Health Protection Agency, which closely monitors the protection of humans from the network wi-fi, says that "people who use wi-fi-or close to such equipment, are exposed to radio waves and some of the radiated energy of radio waves absorbed by the organism. However, these signals are very low energy load. "
The British agency hastens to emphasize that the data are preliminary and at present no data to substantiate that the radio signals from wi-fi adversely effects the health of the general population. Pointed out that even possibly extra-laboratory conditions, things are different and so leaves the correlation, men should not worry.
Dr. Allan passes lecturer in andrology at Sheffield University, said: "The study design was excellent, but always be wary of factors that may interfere with fertility in men who are frequent users of laptops with wi-fi. The ekspermatismeno semen used in research is very sensitive to several factors because conditions outside the body does not provide the protection resulting from other cells, tissues and fluids of the body where that is stored before ejaculation. Therefore, we can not draw the conclusion that using a laptop with wi-fi for more than four hours, automatically imply changes in sperm quality and hence fertility. Large epidemiological studies are needed to determine this and at present the conditions are not ripe for that. "
But in any case men should be careful when using the laptop for several hours and in any event not to place directly on their feet. The radiant heat can adversely affect sperm quality. Indeed, there has been cases of men who caused burns to his penis after long use of the laptop, which was placed not on a specific basis but directly at his feet.
